FOURTEEN

Harvey – real name not Harvey – was standing at the window again after taking a trip out. He’d been watching for her, just in case she came home early, but she hadn’t, so he’d been the one to make the move.

The Red Crown was your basic shithole London pub, filled with a mixture of drunken office workers and in this case, police from around the corner. He’d been there before, of course, sitting and observing from a corner table with a newspaper in front of him to offer concealment, but they had been so pissed, nobody had noticed he was there. Just another suit enjoying a quiet pint at the end of the day before heading off to…where? Anywhere.

Leanne had looked good, even wearing a suit like a man. He knew the female officers could hardly wear dresses when they sometimes had to grapple with a suspect. He had watched as the young man with the newly acquired fifty-pound note in his pocket made his way over to Leanne and bumped into her and that clumsy oaf of a boss. Harvey knew there was a fifty-fifty chance the young man would get caught. He’d already had a drink in him, and had he not been quite so full, he might have been able to make his escape.

Harvey had stepped outside and watched with amusement as they took down the young man. Then he had left. He had seen the copper’s wife start taking photos and he knew he would be in some if not all of them.

What would they see? Some overweight oaf with a bad haircut and scraggy beard. He wore the fake beer belly like a corset, and the hair was a wig, the beard false. Just like he fooled his temporary landlords, the Sturgeons. He couldn’t care less if she described him to the police after he was gone. It wasn’t as if she could pick him out of a lineup.

He was back standing at the window with the light out, his binoculars pressed firmly to his face.

Leanne wouldn’t be driving, but she wouldn’t be walking home either, especially after the episode in the pub. She would be getting dropped off, no doubt, either by a friend or some ride-sharing company. He could stand here watching all night if he had to.

He had asked the old boot downstairs if he could have a sandwich for his dinner, and a cup of milk, to have in his room. She had obliged, and he would make sure he wiped off the fingerprints from the glass and plate and the utensils, just like he had wiped off the pint glass in the pub before putting his gloves on to leave.

Several cars went by and a couple stopped, but it wasn’t Leanne. After an hour and a half, a patrol car stopped. And Harvey watched with a smile as his target got out of the car.
